The Best Sweatshirts, Jumpers, Pullovers…

I saw a woman the other day wearing a black crew-neck sweatshirt with silky black pants, chic flats, and loads of jewellery — layered necklaces, stacked bracelets, statement earrings. On paper, it might sound mismatched, but in real life, it was a truly memorable look. The contrast between casual and dressy, paired with seemingly out-of-place jewellery, was exactly what made it work so well.

It got me thinking about sweatshirts (casual jumpers, pullovers, sweats — whatever you like to call them) and how surprisingly adaptable they are, especially this season.

Of course, they’re the perfect cosy companion to tracksuit pants, but this winter we’re seeing them worn in fresh ways that blend sporty, preppy, and polished elements. You’ve probably noticed Polo Ralph Lauren’s iconic sweatshirts having a major resurgence — I even convinced my husband to buy a few — but what really makes them stand out is the styling. Think shirt collars peeking out underneath, sleeves rolled just so, finished off with accessories like baseball caps or paracord jewellery.

What I’m trying to say is: the sporty sweatshirt has range right now, and it’s not just reserved for downtime. Try it with barrel-leg jeans and heels for the evening, layer one under a coat with boots and a skirt, or go for a rugby-style version with jeans and a block heel, à la Sofia Coppola in i-D magazine recently.

Mixing textures and styles is key — the humble sweatshirt is having a moment, so why not have some fun with it?
