5 Fashion Swaps You Can Try Today

It was bound to happen, right? After the fall of skinny jeans, it was only a matter of time before the fashion world turned on its other tight-legged counterpart — leggings. Yes, it seems that leggings are deemed as over by the powers that be, and instead of being angry and annoyed by this, as I usually am when things are touted as “out” or “in”, I’m kind of relieved.

Leggings have had women in a chokehold for years. Of course, they’re perfect for exercise, but somewhere along the way they became the default “casual daytime” pant, and that’s where they lost me. It’s not that they always look bad, but since when did a skin-tight, lycra-based layer become the baseline for everyday dressing? I appreciate them in a sporty sense, but I despise them for anything else. (The irony is not lost on me that as I write this, I’m wearing leggings with zero plans to work out. I’m not proud.)

This shift away from leggings is what inspired today’s edit. Spring and summer dressing doesn’t need to be complicated, a few subtle swaps can completely change how we look and feel, so I hope you’ll try these fashion updates with me.

Casual Pants Instead of Leggings

See above for why, but also, there are so many variations of “sporty pants” at the moment, choose whatever you feel most comfortable in. These classic Adidas three-stripe pants work for exercise or casual dressing, and they look especially good when layered with more preppy separates up top. Weighted vest optional (but not if you’re over 40 apparently!).

Evening Separates Instead of a Cocktail Dress

If you have a special event coming up and the dress code calls for cocktail, don’t automatically assume that means a dress. I love the idea of a silky matching set with heels and standout accessories — it feels modern and sexy but not so obvious.

A Pull-On Skirt Instead of Jeans

I love that the transition into warmer weather means you can pick and choose between your favourite winter and summer pieces, but that often means jeans as the default bottom. Why not give an elastic-waist skirt a try — they’re just as easy to wear, can be worn with flats or sneakers, and allow for excellent layering up top. I love the idea of them worn with an oversized shirt and a knit thrown over your shoulders.

A Monochrome Look Instead of Different Colours

If you’re not great at styling different colours, or automatically choose black or neutrals when you’re stuck getting dressed, then I urge you to give a monochrome look a try. A matching set makes this easy, but you can also give it a go with varying tones of one colour that you already own. This is such a dramatic yet simple way of achieving a standout look.

Long Shorts Instead of Mini

Long shorts are not only replacing mini lengths this season, but they’re also going to give midi skirts a run for their money. Tailored or denim styles look best when slightly roomy across the leg, and look unexpectedly classic when worn with a belted shirt and kitten heels.
